The ex-Tottenham centre-back has joined Posh on a short-term deal that expires at the end of January.
Basson, 32, once set Spurs back £8million, when they signed him from Newcastle in 2009.
But his latest move cost nothing, as the Cameroon centre-back has been a free agent since he was let go by Norwich last summer.
In a bid to keep fit, Bassong has been training with QPR and featuring for the Championship side in fixtures played behind closed doors.
It was during these games that he caught the attention of Peterborough United.
Peterborough are currently in second place in the table, trailing Portsmouth by just four points, but will no doubt welcome the addition of a player who has captained sides in the top-tier of English football.
The club's manager Steve Evans is thrilled with the signing, he said: "I am delighted.
"After a week or two talking to Sebastien, we are pleased to be able to bring someone of his calibre to this football club.
"His CV is impressive. If you are a captain of clubs like Tottenham and Norwich City and play at the highest level at the likes of Watford, you are obviously a major signing for a club like ours.
"I have taken the opportunity to watch Seb recently when he has played for Queens Park Rangers in closed door fixtures."
Peterborough have strengthened their defence ahead of their trip to Burton Albion this weekend, where Basson is likely to feature in the number 28 shirt.
Evans added: "He is fit, he is ready to go. That was important to us particularly if we were to add to the squad at this stage of the season."
