Fifa have today temporarily taken over rivals Uruguay’s soccer federation.
The global governing body has taken action due to concerns over the governance of the organisation.
And it could be a bitter blow to Uruguay’s chances of winning the right to host the tournament as it prepares to launch its campaign alongside co-hosts Argentina and Paraguay.
Fifa say officials decided to appoint a “normalization committee” that will run the federation until 28 February, 2019.
It follows Uruguayan soccer federation president Wilmar Valdez’s decision to sensationally quit just a day before he was due to stand for re-election last month.
The vote for a new chief has now been put on hold.
Fifa says the electoral process “is not in accordance with the requirements of transparency as outlined in the Fifa and CONMEBOL statutes.”

The South American nation ramped up its campaign for the 2030 tournament by holding a number of events in Moscow through this year’s World Cup.
Fifa has still not outlined the formal bidding process for the 2030 extravaganza.
