England U21s extend their unbeaten run in qualifiers to an incredible 35 matches after beating Scotland

The win ensured the Young Lions finished their Euro 2019 campaign unbeaten.

Arsenal ace Nelson broke the deadlock with a 30-yard free kick in the 60th minute.
Then Everton midfielder Dowell wrapped up the points with a stoppage-time strike from outside the area.

The Young Lions extended their unbeaten run in qualifiers to an incredible THIRTY-FIVE MATCHES, dating back almost seven years.

They had already booked their place at next summer’s Finals as Group Four winners and will go to Italy and San Marino as one of the tournament favourites.

Scotland saw their hopes of bagging one of the play-off spots for the four best runners-ups dashed by their 3-1 defeat to Ukraine in Kiev on Friday.

Scotland boss Scot Gemmell made three changes to his starting line-up, while his opposite number Aidy Boothroyd made just the TEN!

England had the best of the opening 30 minutes and created a number of chances, the best of which fell to Jake Clarke-Salter who headed Kieran Dowell’s 25th minute corner over the bar when he really should have scored.

England then almost paid for failing to clear Lewis Morgan’s free kick into the box as Scotland skipper Ross McCrorie hooked the ball over from eight yards.

The Young Lions’ response was swift as they went straight on the attack.

And West Brom’s on-loan Leicester livewire Harvey Barnes wastefully blazed his shot over the bar with only keeper Ross Doohan to beat after being played in Tammy Abraham.

Winger Barnes then turned provider, as he crossed for Abraham whose first-time volley flew just wide of the target.

The Scotland defence were struggling to contain Abraham and the rookie Chelsea hitman, who is spending this season with Aston Villa, saw his shot blocked by Doohan’s legs.

Boothroyd must have been wondering how his side were not in front at the interval as Josh Onomah half-volleyed wide from Abraham’s flick on the stroke of half-time.

The second half continued in much the same fashion with England pressing forward and the Scots defending doggedly.

When Barnes saw his low shot tipped around the post by keeper Doohan, you felt it would take something special to break the deadlock.

And so it proved after after Italian referee Marco Di Bello awarded England a foul and booked McCrorie for scything down Barnes some 30 yards from goal.

Unfazed by the distance, Nelson stepped up and curled the resulting free kick over the wall and into the top corner of the net.

The strike was so delicious it even had the Scotland fans applauding.
Well, most of them.

Dominic Solanke had a couple of good chances to extend England’s lead before Dowell rifled in a late shot from 20 yards.
