Daniel Cormier is currently the UFC light heavyweight champ and the UFC heavyweight champ.
But he’s going to lose that first belt as soon as the light heavyweight fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson begins on Dec. 29th at UFC 232, as that will instantly become a title fight.
So how does the “Champ, Champ” feel about the UFC taking away one of his belts?
He said the following to Damon Martin of FloCombat:
“Initially, I was very disappointed they were going to give [Jones] the title fight because I really didn’t do anything wrong to get stripped, but I understand the organization has to move forward,” Cormier told FloCombat.
“The reality is I was OK with the decision a little bit more due to the fact that whoever wins the fight, if I decide to go back to 205 [pounds], I’m guaranteed the title fight.”
Pretty thoughtful answer there by D.C., who will defend his heavyweight title at UFC 230 on Nov. 3rd when he takes on Derrick Lewis at Madison Square Garden.
Imagine, however, if he loses that fight and then is without any belts come Dec. 29?
And then imagine if Jones wins… and sets up D.C.-Jones 3.
It could be a crazy few months for D.C., in what has already been an incredible year in his storied career.
