Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur calls time on Scotland career

McArthur has 32 caps and the Scot has quit playing for his country in an attempt to prolong his club career.

After signing a new deal at Selhurst Park last month until 2021, the 31-year-old's decision comes almost a year since he last played for his country.

He tweeted: “It is with much regret I feel the time has arrived for me to retire from international football.

"I have found it increasingly difficult over the last year to manage a number of physical issues.

"I have debated long and hard about this decision and I feel the only way for me to maintain my fitness in order to continue playing at the top level is to retire from international football."

"I would like to thank all the coaches, staff and fellow players with whom I have shared my Scotland career.

"It has been an honour.

"I wish Alex McLeish and his team every success in the future."

The Eagles midfielder made the first of his 32 appearances for Scotland against the Faroe Islands in 2010.

But he has not featured at international level since Scotland's final World Cup qualifier last year drawing with Slovenia when they needed a win to stand any chance of going to Russia.
