The Chelsea midfielder, 22, picked up a foot injury for England this week in his first start of the season.
Loftus-Cheek wanted to use his appearance in the victory over Switzerland to force his way into Maurizio Sarri’s plans.
But he needed a scan the day after the King Power Stadium win and now faces at least two weeks on the sidelines.
He will miss next week’s Europa League clash against PAOK Salonika which he was set to start after just two sub appearances so far for Sarri.
RLC is also likely to miss the EFL Cup clash against Liverpool when Sarri is likely to use fringe players who have not featured regularly in Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season.
Loftus-Cheek has been frustrated after playing regularly for Crystal Palace on loan to force his way into the England squad for the World Cup.
He wanted to stay at Stamford Bridge to fight for his place but Mateo Kovacic has arrived on loan from Real Madrid to join N’Golo Kante and Jorginho in central midfield.
Sarri held talks with Loftus-Cheek after he was left out of the matchday squad in the victory over Arsenal, although the midfielder stayed at the club as the European transfer deadline passed.
But he admitted he could look at a loan move, with Palace interested in re-signing him in January, to cement his England place.
