Champions League of Darts heads to Leicester with £100,000 up for grabs for fans

Fans in attendance at this year’s Champions League of Darts will get to share a £100,000 prize fund if any player hits a nine-darter at the event.

Leicester’s Morningside Arena, home to the Leicester Riders basketball team, will take over as host from the Brighton Centre which hosted last year’s event where Gary Anderson was crowned champion.

This year’s event switches from September to October, with eight players competing in two groups across two days of action. The group stages will take place on Saturday October 19 and the afternoon of Sunday October 20 before the two players top in each group return for Sunday night’s semi-finals and final.

Mensur Suljovic was the first ever champion in 2017 at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena. In fact, Anderson and Suljovic are the only two players to have reached the tournament’s final.

“The Paddy Power Champions League of Darts has been a popular addition to the PDC calendar in the past three years and the Morningside Arena promises to be an excellent host venue,” said PDC Chief Executive Matthew Porter.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to see the world’s eight leading players competing in a quick-fire format across two days. We had great drama in last year’s tournament and expect another high-quality Champions League in October.”

The most eye-catching aspect of Monday’s announcement was the news that the tournament sponsors will offer a £100,000 to be shared between the fans in attendance for any session where a nine-dart finish is achieved.

“We’re excited to bring the Champions League of Darts to Leicester, a city famous for one of the most incredible sporting achievements in recent memory,” said spokesman Paddy Power.

“This year we’re hoping to make history ourselves by offering ticketholders a share of £100,000 in our nine-darter prize pot, believed to be the biggest crowd prize in world sport.”
