Bielsa says Leeds ‘lack players’ but explains why he won’t panic buy in January

Bielsa could be without seven players for tonight’s game at home to Derby due to injuries and suspensions.

Stuart Dallas, Gaetano Berardi and Patrick Bamford are among the injured with Kalvin Phillips suspended after his straight red card at Nottingham Forest on New Year's Day.

After seven Championship win on the bounce, Leeds have lost their last two league games seeing their lead at the top of the table cut to two points.

The Lillywhites were also dumped out of the FA Cup last week at QPR.

But the experienced Argentine coach insists he will not be asking chairman Andrea Radrizzani for additions this as he firmly believes he can work with the players he already has.

He said: “We are lacking players, if the club can bring in players, it will be only if they are better than the players that we have.

“In the next few weeks, we will have Dallas, Berardi, Phillips, Brown, Bamford and Douglas with us, so among the absences, we will have a reduction.

“That’s why I clearly say that if nobody comes, we will solve the problems anyway.”

However, Bielsa claims he cannot use the Yorkshire club’s lack of numbers as an excuse if they drop points to Frank Lampard’s side.

He added: “We have the obligation to win the next game and we can win the next one, we have just lost the last three games.

“The last one we deserved to lose, but the two Championship games, we did not.

“So we have no excuses not to win against Derby County.”

Leeds have been boosted by the return to fitness of skipper Liam Cooper.

The defender is back a week earlier than scheduled from knee surgery.
