Gunners boss Unai Emery will be livid his charges were outfought by struggling Southampton thanks to a Danny Ings double and Charlie Austin's late winner.
Despite the loss, there were still positives for Emery ahead of the midweek Carabao Cup quarter-final at home to Tottenham.
Here's our man-by-man verdict on Arsenal.
Bernd Leno
Could do nothing to stop either Saints goals but looked shaky when the ball is swung into the box, has to do more to command his area and cost his side the game when he failed to take Shane Long's cross for Charlie Austin's winner. But hey, he's great with his feet!
Hector Bellerin
Did what he does best by raiding down the in support of the attackers but should have done more to stop Matt Targett's cross for Ing's opener.
Stephan Lichtsteiner
Steady Eddie up and down the flank used his experience to get through the game but was replaced after the break with injury.
Laurent Koscielny
First league start since May and it showed when he failed to deal with the cross for Saints opener and the dose was repeated by Ings just before half time. Booked for a clumsy foul when he was caught out of position tracking Nathan Redmond.
Nacho Monreal
Spaniard had his hand's full dealing with Saints full-back Yan Valery but managed to free himself to get forward and provide a pinpoint cross from Mkhitaryan's equaliser.
Matteo Guendouzi
Not the young Frenchman's best game tried to put his foot on the ball but got hustled out of it too many times in central midfield. But as Arsenal took charge after the interval his influence grew.
Lucas Torreira
Small in size but huge in stature, not his best game by his high standards due to the home side's fast start but still put his foot in where it hurts breaking up play and sparking attacks.
Granit Xhaka
Asked to do a job in a back three due to the Gunners defensive injury crisis, was given a tough time when Redmond ran at him, not at fault for the Saints' goals and steadied himself after the break.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan
The Armenian looks a different man to the one who looked to have the weight of the world on his shoulders at Manchester United. he ghosted into the box to head the equaliser and rode his luck when his tame shot was deflected in by Jannik Vestergaard.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Gabon forward lead the line well, his early effort saved by McCarthy in the opening exchanges but was too slow after the break to finish from close range allowing Jan Bednarek to recover
Alex Iwobi
Sharp, lively and full of running but failed to make his a real mark on the game and was hauled off after 70 minutes.
Subs:
Alexandre Lacazette
Looked lively in the second half, caused the Saints defence problems with his movement and his only real effort on target was saved at close range by Alex McCarthy.
Mesut Ozil
Sent on by Emery to win the game, but the German had the opposite effect, his slack attempted dummy was intercepted and the home side went straight down the pitch to score the winner.
