Looking at Max Scherzer’s stats from the Washington Nationals 9-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, he had a pretty normal outing on the mound. Seven innings, 10 strikeouts, a handful of hits and a run – just another day at the office for the Nationals’ ace.
Except that it wasn’t. With his 10th strikeout in his final inning, Scherzer became just the 17th pitcher since 1900 to strike out 300 batters in a season and only the sixth since 1990. The three-time Cy Young Award winner leads the majors with at least 10 strikeouts in 18 of his 33 starts this season, and he has 82 double-digit strikeout games in his career. His record is now 18-7 with a 2.53 ERA.
That’s a lot of K’s for the 34-year-old, and this crazy graphic, tweeted by MLB statistician Daren Willman, sums up Scherzer’s dominance over the years.
