Xiaomi has revealed its 5G smartphone in a bid to be the first manufacturer to offer the super-fast internet feature.
The Chinese firm made the announcement at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona – which starts officially tomorrow.
The new smartphone has an astonishing 48-megapixel sliding camera and will be available to customers in May for only €599 (£520).

The handset has been called the Mi MIX 3 5G and it features a full-screen display as and many of the older versions’s existing features.
It takes the existing Mi MIX 3 and incorporates the 5G ability using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor and its X50 5G modem.

The company announced on stage at MWC: ‘5G is here, right now in 2019. 2019 is the year of 5G.
‘This transition will be faster than the 4G transition, We have a mature smartphone user base and educated users. So we expect to see a much faster transition. Xiaomi is very well positioned to capitalise on this opportunity.’

It will be available in sapphire blue and black and looks set to use Xiaomi’s existing connections with 3, Vodafone and Orange – among others – to launch in the UK and Europe.
There is no indication yet if the device will be available in the US.
‘Essentially everything you loved about the Mi Mix 3 is now coming along with 5G,’ Donovan Sung, director of product management for the Xiaomi global team, said Sunday during a press conference.
Wang Xiang, Senior Vice President of Xiaomi added: ‘Xiaomi has spent tremendous efforts developing a 5G smartphone solution and Mi MIX 3 5G represents Xiaomi’s quest to create innovative products for everyone.

‘We are also delighted and honored to be working with our partners to make 5G a reality for even more users all over the world.’
5G is poised to take the smartphone market by storm when it is rolled out in the coming months and years – promising ultra-fast download speeds comparable to that of Wi-Fi.
Trials have been done in the UK in small pockets by a range of service providers – with EE running one in London and Vodafone setting up an exhibition of 5G’s prowess earlier this month at Manchester airport – but a widespread roll-out is not expected until 2020.
WHAT IS 5G?
The evolution of the G system started in 1980 with the invention of the mobile phone which allowed for analogue data to be transmitted via phone calls.
Digital came into play in 1991 with 2G and SMS and MMS capabilities were launched.
Since then, the capabilities and carrying capacity for the mobile network has increased massively.
More data can be transferred from one point to another via the mobile network quicker than ever.
5G is expected to be launched in 2020 and will be up to 1,000 times faster than the currently used 4G.
Whilst the jump from 3G to 4G was most beneficial for mobile browsing and working, the step to 5G will be so fast they become almost real-time.
That means mobile operations will be just as fast as office-based internet connections.
Potential uses for 5g include:
- Simultaneous translation of several languages in a party conference call
- Self-driving cars can stream movies, music and navigation information from the cloud
- A full length 8GB film can be downloaded in six seconds.
5G is expected to be so quick and efficient it is possible it could start the end of wired connections.
By the end of 2020, industry estimates claim 50 billion devices will be connected to 5G.
