Woman accused of ‘appropriating Joker culture’ for dressing as Joaquin Phoenix

A young woman who dressed up as female version of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker has sparked controversy because – according to self-styled ‘incels ’– her costume appropriates ‘Joker culture.’

Veronica Rae, a popular cosplayer who has more than 28,000 followers on Facebook, shared the images from a photoshoot in which she adapted the iconic Joker look with a swimsuit and long green wig.

She captioned her photos “I used to think my life was a tragedy, but now I realise, it’s a comedy…I whipped up a female Joker in about 2 days just so I could shoot on the iconic stairs!”

The damaged character at the centre of the Todd Phillips’ comic-book adaptation has become a rallying point for people, mainly young men, who feel alienated from society.

“It’s extremely disrespectful and offensive, who lets femoids do this,” one commenter said. “Everyone who defends this woman is a coomer.”

Femoids, in internet parlance, means attractive women while ‘coomer’ means ‘enthusiastic masturbator.’

“This is oppressive to gamers,” one person commented.

And another, apparently unaware of iconic DC character Harley Quinn or cult classic comic Thrillkiller, added: “The Joker could have not been a woman.”

But few people sided with Rae, with one saying: “So you not gon' complain about anime girls having outrageously huge boobs bouncing around, but find this unsettling? You like boys don’t you?”

Rae wasn’t bothered by the outbreak of whining though. She playfully posted a response of her own – a photo of herself dressed as a sexy version of Star Wars hate-figure Jar Jar Binks.

Mocking her critics, she captioned it: “I hear you all loud and clear. Is this better for you?”

She’s now taking a break from social media until all the fuss dies down.
