A bizarre-looking animal has washed up on a beach in Scotland – sparking fierce debate about what it might be.
While the body is furry, suggesting that it could be the remains of a drowned cat or other small mammal, the exposed skull is distinctly reptilian.
This has led some to speculate that it might be an unusual type of lizard.
The image of the mysterious creature that washed up on the Aberdeen shoreline surfaced on Facebook community page Fubar News, on which users had a long and passionate discussion about it might be.

One person said: ”My first instinct was a cat, but the skull, especially the teeth and lower jaw, are all wrong. Its more like a reptile skull.”
While another countered: “I'd say clearly Iguana or similar, at least the head and I guess I see a reptile skin.
“That, or someone played a Halloween trick and made up parts.”

The idea that the corpse might be a "frankenstein" construction made of parts of various different animals was a popular one.
One user said: "It’s a Fakenstein… definitely someone’s creation I’d say.
“Or it’s washed up on the beach during a storm from an island that no one's ever discovered, because the more I look at each individual part of its body and the crab legs in its abdomen I’m thinking that it’s definitely fake or undiscovered".

While the idea that it might be a cat gained some traction, after one user pointed out that cat skulls are rather more reptile-like than you might imagine.
Some others dismissed that, saying while the skull was similar to a cats “it lacks upper and lower canines, and appears to have rows of small, sharp teeth just like a reptile".
The commenter continued: "There's also a row of spines or 'frill' around the top of the skull which you would only expect to see in certain lizards/reptiles.”
