Scientists reveal why it’s so hard to concentrate when you’re hungover

If you were out at the pub last night, you may be struggling to function at your desk this morning.

Now, scientists from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne have revealed why that’s the case – and unsurprisingly, your hangover is to blame.

In the study, the researchers breathalysed and interviewed more than 100 people at the end of a boozy night out.

The following morning, participants were asked to complete a cognitive test that measured brain function, particularly memory.

Unsurprisingly, getting people to participate wasn’t exactly easy.

Dr Sarah Benson, who led the study, said: “Getting people to complete the next-day measures can be tricky, as hangovers can prevent participants from completing the prescribed test.

"By having our participants complete the next-day measures online, we made it relatively simple to take part but we are still looking towards better ways to improve engagement."

The results revealed that people who had a higher breath alcohol concentration on the night reported worse hangover symptoms and performed worse in the test than more sober participants.
