More than one scientist has, over the years, wondered why humans are so different to any other animals on Earth.
Now one man thinks he has the answer.
Dr Ellis Silver has developed an extraordinary theory that explains some of the scientific oddities about mankind.
We are not, he says, native to this planet.
In fact, he claims, we were transplanted between 60,000 and 200,000 years ago from another star system – very likely Alpha Centauri.
He suggests, for example, that we might be so prone to suffering from back pain because our bodies evolved on a planet with lower gravity.
And he points out a number of other ways in which we are not well-adapted to our current environment – including intolerance of numerous common foods and even an inability to cope with strong sunlight.
Dr Silver thinks he knows why we ended up so far from home too.
He said: “One reason for this is that the Earth might be a prison planet since we seem to be a naturally violent species and we’re here until we learn to behave ourselves.”

He first got his idea that humans might be immigrants to this planet when he became dazzled by the Sun.
“I was walking along the street,” he says in his book Humans are not from Earth: a scientific evaluation of the evidence, "and was hit full in the face by the Sun’s powerful glare.
“Total whiteout. Couldn’t see a thing.”

He says that when he found some shade and was able to see again, he was struck by the presence of birds everywhere: “They weren’t shielding their eyes with their wings. They weren’t in pain, as I had been. They weren’t blindly crashing into buildings and trees. They weren’t diving for shelter.”
Dr Silver points out that birds have an extra third eyelid that prevents a lot of unnecessary light getting through.
Our one-time rivals on this planet, the Neanderthals, had a prominent brow ridge that kept the bright sun out of their eyes.
But humans, he says, have nothing. Just the vestigial remains of a lost third eyelid that for some reason evolution decided we didn’t need.

And we didn’t need it, Silver says, because we didn’t evolve here.
He goes on to list all the situations where being dazzled by the sun can be dangerous, even fatal, and notes that in supposed autopsies of ‘Gray’ aliens, the space travellers have a removable non-blinking dark membrane over their eyes.
He says that our unsuitability for living on Earth is responsible for millions of niggling health problems worldwide: “If you can find a single person who is 100% and healthy and not suffering from some perhaps hidden or unstated condition or disorder I would be extremely surprised – I have not been able to find anyone."

Dr Silver’s somewhat offbeat theory is endorsed by anthropologist Robert Sepehr.
Sepehr’s book Species with Amnesia: Our Forbidden History, touches on a number of other unique traits of humanity, such as Rh-negative blood.
It reads: “There are 612 primate species and subspecies recognised by the International Union for Conversation of Nature, and not one has Rh-negative blood” he says.
He adds that roughly 85% of all human beings have Rh-positive blood yet, he says, all members of royal families have Rh-negative blood.

Sepher believe that we are just the latest of a number of civilisations that have occupied the Earth.
In every case, he claims, those civilisations have been struck by some global calamity and died out with just a select few holding on to the secret knowledge of the previous societies.

Another researcher who believes that people with the Rh-negative blood type are descended from ancient astronauts is writer Lara Starr.
“RH Positive blood can be traced back to the Rhesus monkey and all other primates,” she says. “But Rh-negative blood cannot.
“In fact,” she continues, “it cannot be traced anywhere else in nature."

Starr claims that people originally from the Basque region, on the borders of France and Spain, are more likely to have Rh-negative blood than people from anywhere else on Earth.
She goes on to say that the original Basque language is unrelated to any others and theorises that it could be the original language spoken by space travellers before they began hybridise themselves with the Neanderthals and other early hominids.
The connection may not be purely historical. Starr notes that people who report having been abducted by aliens are especially likely to have Rh-negative blood.
So, not only did the aliens send us here, there are signs that they want us back.
