Russia reveals owl stealth drone designed to trick enemy systems

The stealth drone is designed to closely resemble a snowy owl.

It’s slightly bigger than the real thing, which has a wingspan of almost 5ft, but its makers claim it will be much harder to spot than conventional reconnaissance drones.

The robot owl is intended to get close to potential targets and ‘paint’ them using a laser targeting system so they can be hit with precision-guided bombs launched from conventional aircraft.

The owl-drone was devised by students at Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy, which is one of Russia’s leading research universities for robotic aircraft armament systems.

The revolutionary device was unveiled at the Russian Army 2019 Forum which opened at the Patriot Congress and Exhibition Centre outside Moscow today.

Russia’s Central Research Institute of Precision Machine-Building will exhibiting their AO-36 double-barrelled 5.6mm assault rifle, an fearsome experimental firearm developed in the 1960s but never put into full production.

Rostec Industrial Director Sergei Abramov said Although, these models did not go into serial production, they influenced the development of combat small arms as their design solutions were used in other types of firearms.”

Another drone for use by the Russian military machine – which is still being kept under wraps so far –  is a robotic falcon which reportedly “makes bird-like noises” to fool observers.
