Facebook has several groups, some of which are closed to the general public, that focus on the health benefits of drinking your own urine.
People are drinking wee, rubbing it on their bodies and soaking their feet in it. They’re even aging it, as if it is some kind of fine whisky, which is isn’t, in spite of the colour.
The claims made about the wee drinking are the usual sort you’d expect from scientifically unfounded ideas. You’ll have more energy, your body will cleanse itself and some people have even claimed it can cure cancer.
Actual science disputes all of these claims and there are no studies that actually link urine with any sort of magic cure for, well, anything at all really.
In one post on a public group a urine drinker claims that "nutrition is truly a myth" and has moved over entirely to fasting an consuming her own yellow juice as a way of sustaining herself.
She also claims to be a breatharian – someone who claims we can absorb all the nutrients we need from breathing and standing around in the sun.
Other posts from closed groups were posted online by Twitter user @Skyear_ . They included more people washing their feet in wee and a woman posing with a glass of urine.
Urine is often described as sterile, which some people seem to have taken as permission to drink theirs. However, urine isn’t sterile and drinking it is a terrible idea.
Urine is a waste product. While it is made up mostly of water it also contains salt, ammonia and other byproducts.
As it exits your body it passes through your urethra, which like most of your body is home to colonies of bacteria. These are fine in their natural home, but they could cause problems if ingested.
There’s also the problem that if you drink urine you’re putting stress on your kidneys that must then process the toxins again.
Even people trapped or stranded are advised against drinking their own urine in desperation. Your body will naturally hold on to water as much as it can and drinking your urine can upset this delicate balance.
