Panama has been hit by a powerful earthquake. The USGS reported the tremor measured magnitude five on the Richter scale. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit roughly 70 kilometres north of Panama City, in the shores of the Caribbean Sea.

Although it did not quite make land, the tremor was strong enough that it caused buildings to shake through Panama City, witnesses claimed.

However, there has so far been no reports of damages to building or injuries to the 4.2 million population of Panama.

The tremor struck at 7.13am BST on May 1 at a depth of 27.1km.
