Only those with the sharpest minds can figure out the next number in 17 seconds

Training our brain can be a valuable way to keep yourself healthy, and every week GCHQ comes up with a brainteaser to do just that.

One of the puzzles they concocted was challenging the reader to work out what the next number in the above sequence is.

The challenge gives you a series of seven numbers and asks you to work out what the next number would be. The numbers are: 7, 8, 5, 3, 4, 4.

Can you work it out?

Brainteasers are a great way to push the mind to its limits and keep one of the body’s most important organs in shape.

They’re quick to do and can be done on the train to work or while in a waiting room.

Some brainteasers test your analytical skills, some test your mathematical skills, and some test your observational ability.

Did you manage to figure out what the next number is in less than 17 seconds?

The next number in the sequence is 6, as the previous seven numbers corresponded to the number of letters in the months of the year from January to July.

So, January has seven letters, February and eight letters, March has five letters and so on.

In the same way, sports and exercise help keep the muscles healthy, so too do brainteasers and other mental exercises. The healthier the brain is the less likely someone will develop dementia.

This doesn’t mean doing brainteasers will stop someone from getting dementia, other factors can have a bigger impact, but they could help keep the mind sharper for longer.
