NASA’s Perseverance Rover will touch down on the surface of Mars on February 18. The machine, along with several other probes which are currently in orbit around the Red Planet, could one day pave the way for human colonisation.
However, while the likes of Elon Musk and NASA hope to get humans to Mars, Greta Thunberg has reiterated the need to focus on the climate problem plaguing Earth.
The ‘advert’, called ‘one percent’ as it is supposedly aimed at only the richest who may eventually leave Earth, was created by the Fridays for Future (FFF) campaign, which was established by teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, appears as if it serves as a tourism ad for the Red Planet.
A voiceover in the ad says: “After more than five million years of human existence on Earth, it’s time for a change.
“Mars, 56 million square miles of untouched land, breathtaking landscapes, and incredible views.
“Mars, an untainted planet, a new world where we can begin again. Mars offers the ultimate freedom.”
The advert also promises a place where there is “no war, no criminality, no pandemics, and no pollution”.
However, a message at the end of the video says: “And for the 99 percent who will stay on Earth, we’d better fix climate change.”
An FFF spokesperson told EuroNews: “We wanted to highlight pure nonsense.
“Government-funded space programs and the world’s ultra-wealthy one percent are laser-focused on Mars (NASA’s Perseverance Rover alone cost $2.7 billion for development, launch, operations and analysis) – and yet, most humans will never get a chance to visit or live on Mars.
“This is not due to a lack of resources – but the fact that our global systems don’t care about us – and refuse to take equitable action.”
A warming planet leads to a plethora of problems – not just the fact it will become obviously hotter.
Global warming leads to an increase in strength in storms and socio-economic problems – including forcing millions to leave their coastal homes due to rising sea levels.

The heating planet will also affect Earth’s delicate ecosystems which will lead to an increase in the rate of extinction for many species.
The planet is continuing to warm, with scientists stating the global temperature has risen by roughly 0.15-0.20C per decade.
Global warming is contributing to a loss of ice cover in the Arctic and Antarctic circles and researchers believe Greenland could be one of the worst affected.
The ice covering Greenland is up to three kilometres thick in certain places, covering an area seven times the amount of the UK.
If all of this ice were to melt, it would cause sea levels to rise by a staggering seven metres, which could have major implications for the UK.
