Five asteroids will skim past Earth tomorrow – including one the size of Big Ben

Five huge asteroids are set to skim past Earth tomorrow, NASA has revealed.

The space agency’s Centre for Near Earth Object Studies tracks any nearby space rocks, and has revealed that five asteroids are set to make a close approach tomorrow.

The largest of the five has been dubbed 2019 TM7, and is estimated to measure between 42 metres and 95 metres in diameter.

At the higher end of that estimate, this suggests that the space rock could be the same size as London’s iconic Big Ben!

2019 TM7 will be 2.5 million miles from Earth when it passes at 14:41 BST tomorrow – although this is still termed a ‘close approach’ by NASA.

The other four asteroids, called 2019 TE2, 2019 TW6, 2019 TP5 and 2019 TA1 are slightly smaller, ranging in size from an estimated 31 metres to 59 metres in diameter.

Thankfully, the closest of the five approaches is at 1.9 million miles, meaning there’s very little chance of a collision.

NASA discovers around 30 new ‘near-Earth objects’ (NEOs) every week, and at the start of 2019 had discovered a total of more than 19,000 objects.
