Elon Musk warns he is fighting ‘a battle for the future of civilization’

Eccentric billionaire Elon Musk has declared he is spearheading a “battle for the future of civilisation” with a chilling warning that “tyranny is all that lies ahead” should the human race choose the wrong path.

The SpaceX and Tesla CEO reckons his newly acquired social media site Twitter should lead the way in protecting freedom of speech, which he says is key to ensuring the future of humanity.

His dramatic beliefs have already led to him making controversial decisions on the micro-blogging platform, including reinstating banned users such as Donald Trump and Kanye West.

West was suspended from Twitter in October for a string of anti-Semitic tweets, but he is on the platform just months later thanks to Elon Musk, who has also reinstated the accounts of other users banned for hateful conduct under the site’s former policies.

That includes Donald Trump, who was banned after inciting an insurrection at the US Senate in 2021, which resulted in nine deaths.

The world’s richest man had opened the decision of whether to allow the former President of the United States back onto Twitter to a public vote.

Musk shared a poll asking users to vote 'yes' or 'no' on having Trump return to the platform. 'Yes' won the poll, with 51.8% of voters backing his return.

Taking to Twitter to back up the decision, Musk wrote: “This is a battle for the future of civilization. If free speech is lost even in America, tyranny is all that lies ahead.”

But the free speech absolutist’s plans to loosen regulations on what can be posted to Twitter haven’t been popular with everyone.

Musk was recently dealt a huge new blow after 50 of the world's top 100 advertisers reportedly pulled out of advertising on the site.

The social media platform is believed to have taken a $2billion (£1.6bn) hit as a result, claims non-profit media watchdog Media Matters for America.
