Divers find treasure trove of artefacts in mysterious sunken city of Heracleion

While Heracleion was once a busy metropolis, the ancient city has been submerged underwater since it flooded 1,500 years ago.

Now, divers have swum through the ancient Egyptian city, uncovering a treasure trove of artefacts in the process.

Divers from Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities have discovered the remains of a temple, bronze coins and a missing piece of a ceremonial boat.

Heracleion was built on the edge of the Nile in the eight century BC, and was one of Egypt’s busiest cities before it flooded.

Amazingly, the city remained undiscovered until 2000, when archaeologists found it sunken in the Mediterranean Sea.

In the 19 years since then, experts have slowly unravelled the mysteries of the ancient city.

In the latest excavation, archaeologists spent two months exploring the sunken city, and discovered a range of precious items.
