Dangers of ‘drunkorexia’ revealed as people skip meals to drink alcohol

It’s something that affects as many as 40% of young Brits, yet you’ve probably never heard of ‘drunkorexia’.

The eating disorder sees people skip meals in order to save calories for excessive alcohol consumption.

This technique, which researchers believe is used by as many as 40% of 25-34-year-olds, comes with some worrying side-effects.

Speaking to Global News, Susan Macfarlane, a registered dietician, said: “Alcohol consumed on an empty stomach can lead to rapid intoxication and impair both our cognitive and physical abilities.

“And over time, reducing food intake in favour of alcohol can lead to malnutrition and an increased risk of disease, such as cancer, diabetes and liver problems.”

Instead of reducing food intake before drinking, experts suggest that people should look to consuming drinks with fewer calories.

For example, you could swap beer for vodka, soda and lime.

Andrea Miller, a dietician based in Ontario, said: “What I often tell people is alternate an alcoholic beverage with a non-alcoholic beverage.

“So have your glass of wine and then a carbonated water with lemon or lime.”
