Ariana Grande blessed the world with another bop today with her new single, “7 Rings.” Whereas “Thank U, Next” shows the singer promoting self-love and growth post-breakup, her latest release shows her finding comfort in her friendships as a strong, single woman.
In case you questioned how she’s holding up after her very public breakup, “7 Rings” is proof that Ari is doing great, if not better, in the company of her girls and her wealth. (“I’d rather spoil all my friends with my riches,” she sings in the second verse.)
Even better, it offers a hip-hop spin on “My Favorite Things,” the Rogers & Hammerstein classic sung by Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. Grande interpolates the melody in her verses with a saucy attitude.
Below, we break down the key lines behind Ari’s latest hit.
The Rings
In November, following Grande’s split from Davidson, fans noticed the singer was wearing a new diamond ring in an Instagram photo, instead of the tear-shaped engagement ring from her ex. Two days later, she shared another picture of herself wearing the ring, with a friend wearing a similar rock. She also posted a video of her and her pals wearing diamonds in a video on her Instagram story.
In December, Grande revealed to fans on Twitter that she got rings for herself and six of her closest friends. (She also got one for her mom and grandmother after making the song.)
The jewelry splurge ultimately inspired the song. Grande tweeted, “well …………. ‘twas a pretty rough day in nyc. my friends took me to tiffany’s. we had too much champagne. i bought us all rings. it was very insane and funny. & on the way back to the stu [studio] njomza was like ‘bitch, this gotta be a song lol’. so we wrote it that afternoon.”

In her tweet, Grande said she got rings for her friends “vic, courtney, alexa, tayla, njomza, kaydence.” Meet the crew:
Victoria Monét: She’s also a singer, and has appeared in Grande’s “Thank U, Next” video and performed the song with her on Ellen.
Alexa Luria: She and Grande apparently met years ago when they were brought together by a P.E. teacher, she revealed on Instagram a while back. Luria boasts a killer food and travel Instagram.
Courtney Chipolone: One of Grande’s longtime friends, Chipolone also made a cameo in the “Thank U, Next” video. Ariana apparently has her name tattooed to her knee.

Tayla Parx: The singer-songwriter has had a hand in a number of hits, including Grande’s own “Thank U, Next,” Normani and Khalid’s “Love Lies,” Panic! at the Disco’s “High Hopes,” and Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar’s “Tints.”
Njomza: She’s also a singer-songwriter, and she’s previously worked with Grande’s ex, Mac Miller and appeared on his album, The Divine Feminine.
Kaydence: She’s an artist and songwriter, and is credited as a composer and lyricist for Grande’s Sweetener track, “Better Off.”
Pete Davidson
Grande doesn’t name-drop her ex-fiancé directly like she did on “Thank U, Next,” but she does hint at their breakup in a few lines.
In the first verse, Grande references some of the “bad sh*t” she’s been through, which might be about her and Davidson’s split in October, but could also include the passing of her late boyfriend, Mac Miller, and the bombing at her Manchester concert in 2017. She also implies she’d rather not be “tied up” in a relationship and proves she’s talking about her own life experiences by reminding us that she does write her own lyrics.
In the second verse, Grande says she’s wearing a rock, but it’s not the nearly-$100,000 engagement ring from Davidson. She again references their breakup by saying she’s not about to be someone’s Mrs.
The Thank U, Next Easter Egg
Before releasing “7 Rings,” Grande actually teased the song in her “Thank U, Next” music video. Did you catch it? The title was the license plate for her Porsche at the beginning of the Legally Blonde tribute in her aughts-era movie montage.
