The Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Saga: Is There a Double Standard?

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s relationship was never intended to stand the test of time. After all, the two stars met as teenagers and engaged in a cyclic relationship that was impossible for most people to keep track of. Just a few months after Gomez and Bieber called it quits for the last time, he went ahead and popped the question to Hailey Baldwin. Now married to Baldwin, Bieber seems sufficiently happy, at least with his relationship. Gomez, on the other hand, has seemed to struggle romantically. Fans aren’t helping by lambasting the former Disney star for her most recent song, which many people think is about Bieber. Everyone, however, should remember that Bieber dropped an entire album worth of songs that were primarily about Gomez, and everyone seemed perfectly okay with it, so is there a double standard?

Fans lambasted Selena Gomez over her new song

Gomez dropped her latest song, “Lose You to Love Me” on Oct. 23. Moments after the song was released, fans of the former super couple began analyzing every single line in the song. Most walked away with a pretty strong suspicion that the song was about Bieber, according to Glamour. One line, in particular, seems to seal the deal. Gomez sings, “In two months you replaced us like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it in the thick of healing.” The line appears to reference the fact that Bieber took his new relationship at warp speed shortly after he parted ways with Gomez.

Look, it’s obvious the songis about Bieber. There really is no denying it. It makes perfect sense that itwould be. Clearly, Bieber was an important figure in the 27-year-old songstress’life. The on-again-off-again nature of their relationship clearly wounded Gomez, and that is to be expected.

What wasn’t expected was theoutpouring of criticism that Gomez received for the single. Bieber fans took tosocial media to suggest Gomez needs to get over it. Several took to Instagramand Twitter to defend Bieber’s decision.

Wait, didn’t Justin Bieber pen enough songs about Selena Gomez to fill an album?

Bieber isn’t above using his past relationship to fuel his musical career. There are several songs that Bieber has written over the years that appear to reference his relationship with Gomez directly. “Where Are You Now,” on which Bieber appeared, is absolutely believed to be about Gomez. Bieber’s “Bad Day” and “Nothing Like Us” are both considered to be about Gomez, as well.

Bieber hasn’t been shy about the fact that he’s used his relationshipwith Gomez as inspiration for his songs. He has stated, in interviews, that he’sused his relationship with his now-ex to fuel his writing, and fans have been completelyfine with it.

To be fair, Bieber isn’t the only musician who has used Gomezas a muse. Fans have long assumed Charlie Puth’s “Attention” is about a short-livedromance with Gomez. Accordingto E! News, Puth all but confirmed the fact in a Billboard interview. He said, “I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’ssomething else going on behind the scenes. And that’s what was happening. Veryshort-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up. I’mtrying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only personon her mind.”

The Weeknd, has also penned a couple of songs that people believe are about Gomez. Fans think the performer’s songs “Hurt You” and “Call Out My Name” were about the songstress. Gomez and The Weeknd dated for about 10 months in 2015.

Is there a double standard?

The outpouring of criticism for “Lose You to Love Me” seemingly highlights a double standard in the couple’s ill-fated relationship. While Bieber has been given plenty of room to behave as he wishes, the same is not true for Gomez, at least when it comes to fan reactions.

It’s a pretty common issue, though. It’s likely one Gomez expected. The starlet has been lambasted for her relationship with Bieber for years. Back in 2011, she was attacked by fans when photos of her getting hot and heavy with Bieber emerged. When the couple ended their courtship, Gomez seemed to bear the brunt of ill-will, and she weathered a similar storm when the couple got back together.

Bieber, on the other hand, has walked away relatively unscathed. Well, at least when it comes to hate regarding his past relationship with Gomez. He and his current wife have weathered breakup rumors ever since they tied the knot. Baldwin has also taken a brutal beating on social media for getting with the pop star.
