Like the guy who took this photograph of Spencer P. Jones, like the Brisbane rock band who shared a stage with Jones' own band the Escape Committee, like the record store owner who's shop Jones would drop into from time to time, and no doubt like the countless people expressing their sadness on social media this week; almost everyone that came into contact with Spencer P. Jones has a memorable story about the much loved rock 'n' roller.
Jones died on Tuesday, August 21. He leaves behind a huge body of work, including albums he made with the Johnnys, Beasts of Bourbon and many, many glorious stories.
Spencer P. Jones
Sticky sat down with Jones outside that same record shop, not far from his Melbourne home a few years back when Beasts of Bourbon announced a bunch of re-union shows. He looked a little weary, a little older perhaps than his 55 or 56 years at the time, but when it came to having a chat about music on a sunny afternoon, there was nothing stopping Jones once he got rolling.
Like one of his sublime live performances on stage – be it with one of his many bands over four decades or in solo mode – he slipped into a casual groove. And that day he stayed in the groove until the sun faded from view, chatting about something he cherished. Music. Thanks Spencer, thanks.
Kawaguchi Masami’s New Rock Syndicate

New Rock Syndicate
(Kasumuen)
★★½
It's a bit Dick Dale, a little bit Black Mountain and generally very trippy, as one might expect from Japanese psych-rock guitarist Masami Kawaguchi (of Miminokoto, Los Doronocos and other bands). Here, the veteran of Tokyo's underground music scene dips a toe in straight up swagger (From Now On), wonky grooves (Your Guitar) and the simply strange (Sound of the Bell) all sung in his native tongue. It's a little more than a decade since Kawaguchi formed his New Rock Syndicate and three albums in he's not about to stop pushing its boundaries.
