Sony Under Fire For Releasing Possibly Fake Michael Jackson Songs

Sony Music is finding themselves in the hot seat this week as it was recently revealed that they allegedly released “fake” Michael Jackson songs on one of his tribute albums. Yikes! Not a good look for Sony, that’s for sure.

According to Fortune, Sony released a posthumous album of what was meant to be unreleased tracks by the late singer, Michael Jackson. The 2010 album, titled Michael, was a massive success and was released the year after Jackson’s passing. Eight years later, the music company has reportedly admitted that a few tracks were never even sung by the King of Pop himself.

According to the record label, two producers who worked on three songs, “Breaking News”, “Monster,” and “Keep Your Head Up”, all which appeared on the 2010 album, duped them. Epic Records, who released the album, has yet to comment on the allegations, but lawyers representing Sony Music and Jackson’s estate have since clarified the statement.

The album was controversial from its release, and many fans, including members of the Jackson family, speculated whether or not certain vocals were Jackson. This isn’t the first time Sony is finding themselves in trouble either; a fan sued the company in 2014, claiming the songs weren’t Jackson singing. Sony producers Eddie Cascio and James Porte claim the songs were recorded in the basement of Cascio’s house in 2007, but that didn’t stop the skepticism from growing.

Fast track to Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, Sony reportedly “admitted” to the Los Angeles Superior Court that the songs were “recorded by an impersonator named Jason Malachi,” ultimately leading to Sony’s admission. The vocal impersonator himself purportedly admitted in a 2011 Facebook post to recording those songs, however, his manager later denied it, claiming the social media post was “fake”.

As of this Friday, there has yet to be a decision from the court on whether Jackson’s estate would receive any form of damages from the claims, or if Sony Music would be responsible for issuing the album buyers with a refund. According to Variety, new reports being released claim that Sony never “admitted” to such claims. And the plot thickens!

A rep from Sony Music, Zia Modabber, said: “No one has conceded that Michael Jackson did not sing on the songs. The hearing Tuesday was about whether the First Amendment protects Sony Music and the Estate and there has been no ruling on the issue,” Zia said.

We aren’t sure what to believe at this point, but die-hard fans remain certain on their beliefs that Jackson did not sing those songs. With the trial still in effect, stay tuned for more updates!
