Nicki Minaj and Zayn explore romantic frustration on their new EDM-pop song “No Candle No Light.”
The duo exchange soulful lines about a doomed relationship over pulsating synths and gleaming electronics. “Hand on your hand, chest on your chest/ Tangled in bed, but I’m feeling you less,” Minaj croons. “You know my love ain’t free/ Why do you make believe? Why do you sell me dreams?” On the chorus, they sing in unison, “I woke up on the wrong side of ya,” building to a breakdown of pitch-shifted vocal samples.
“No Candle No Light” follows a run of solo work and collaborations for both artists in 2018. Minaj recently hopped on Tyga’s “Dip” remix, issued a video for her track “Barbie Dreams” and released her fourth LP, Queen. Zayn’s latest singles include “Let Me,” “Entertainer,” “Sour Diesel,” “Too Much” (with Timbaland) and “Fingers”; he has yet to detail the title or track list for his upcoming second LP, which follows his 2016 debut LP, Mind of Mine.
In October, singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman sued Minaj for copyright infringement for using a sample of her song “Baby Can I Hold You” on Minaj’s “Sorry.”
