One year ago, on Oct. 23, 2018, BTS‘ RM released his second mixtape, mono. Once dropped, the K-pop group’s leader met with critical acclaim for his honest and introspective lyrics as well as the mixtape’s emotional sound. Meanwhile, mono. charted on the Billboard 200 at No. 26, which made RM the highest-charting Korean solo artist on the board. Now, BTS fans are celebrating the anniversary of RM’s mono. mixtape. And of course, ARMY filled social media with plenty of loving messages, illustrating their appreciation for the 25-year-old artist.
BTS fans trend “1YearWithMono” on Twitter
When the clock struck midnight in Korea on Oct. 23, BTS fans flooded Twitter with organized hashtags to highlight the anniversary of mono. The fans made #1YearWithMono trend number one worldwide. Then the hashtags #MONOversary, #ILoveYouSoRM, and #ForeverRM also found their way to the top worldwide trends on Twitter.
For the most part, fans used the hashtags to share their thanks on the social media platform.
“Last year, Namjoon shared mono with aRMy after less than a week’s notice,” one fan tweeted with a purple heart. “By expressing deep feelings and thoughts through his music, Joon gave us the means to be comforted by him time and time again. Thank you, Namjoon.”
“Thank you RM for making Mono,” another fan wrote. “This planet has one more treasure now.”

In true RM fashion, many BTS fans also delved deeper into the importance of the mono. mixtape, which the “moonchild” singer often refers to as a “playlist”
“RM mono playlist is like a storytelling that we can all connect & relate to,” one Twitter user wrote. “We struggle in our own way in our own world, but we share the same sentiments. Namjoon knows. He knows very well.”
Then on Reddit, another fan praised the “narrative structure” of the album as well as its impact on its listeners.
“It feels like a friend holding your hand through all the difficult moments you go through in life- not shying away, disregarding, or trivializing any of our problems, but acknowledging them all the same and telling us we’ll be fine despite it all,” the fan explained. “Namjoon mentioned that he wanted to make an album that reminds you of moments in life and he definitely nailed it with mono.“
Meanwhile, some ARMY also shared how RM’s mono. touched their lives on a personal level within the past year.
“I remember how when it first came out I just couldn’t listen to it more then once at a time, it just made my heart hurt but after a while this was all i listened to for months,” a Reddit user explained. “Mono is still a friend who comforts you during your dark time and also really great when you want to concentrate on something as it plays in the background.”
And then another fan revealed their ARMY journey is all due to the mono. mixtape.
“What I consider my starting point as an army is mono. Listening to the whole playlist felt cathartic, so much that I literally broke into happy tears with everythingoes,” the BTS fan wrote. “So I can definitely thank RM not only for producing and sharing his wonderful work, but also because without it who knows how long I would’ve taken to finally accept I was already an army.”
It’s only been a year since RM’s mono. mixtape was released into the world. However, the fan response to the album’s anniversary proves the BTS member put forth music with enough heart to last a lifetime. And in all honesty, it’s a happy reminder to all of us that at least this planet has Namjoon.
