Benedict Cumberbatch put his Sherlock hat on in the most unexpected of circumstances when he spotted a Deliveroo driver being attacked in London’s Marylebone High Street.
Earlier this year, the TV detective/mystical Marvel superhero was reported to be near his on-screen home of Baker Street in an Uber with his wife, Sophie Hunter, when he jumped to the aid of a cyclist against four men.
However, the Hollywood actor revealed he now looks back on his decision to intervene in the attack with reservations, as there was no movie magic to ensure the situation diffused smoothly.
“I didn’t really think twice about knives or acid or any of the other things that can be part of that situation so it was a bit foolhardy,” he said of the unknown dangers during a chat on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“I literally got in the way,” he continued. “I also tried to stop traffic so they could witness it and if anything did happen, there were people there and that might scare any violence out of the situation.”
He ended by adding: “It’s all got a bit exaggerated. I feel a bit weird talking about it.”
But Cumberbatch still received the praise from the Uber driver, Manuel Dias, who praised the actor as knowing “exactly what he was doing”.
“He was very brave,” he said at the time. “He did most of it, to be honest.”
So, it looks like Cumberbatch’s hero training has stood him in good stead then, and here’s hoping he somehow manages to repeat that feat in next year’s Avengers 4 to save our other favourite heroes from an eternity as dust.
All the pieces of the plan appear to be in place, but we still have a bit of time to wait before we find out if any of our theories are near the mark, as Avengers 4 will be released in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019.
Avengers: Infinity War is out now on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download.
