What exactly is Raya?

Dubbed the app for the rich and famous, Raya apparently houses profiles of models, actors and musicians, and one writer for The Cut even spoke about matching with Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Raya is basically like a private club or unmarked nightclub, except it's in your pocket, and a DM from Jake Gyllenhaal could pop up at any moment.

While this isn’t the first online dating service to wow with its clientele, it does have a strategy that’s more noticeable than most.

Raya operates quietly. Since laughing in March 2015 the press have hardly picked up the app, until recently, making the people that gravitate towards it far more elusive and less likely to crop up on everyday apps like Bumble and Tinder.

Can anyone join?

There’s a fee – a one-month membership is $7.99 and it links to Instagram accounts instead of Facebook. You’re also far more likely to be accepted if referred by someone who is already on the app.

The self-proclaimed “exclusive platform for people in creative industries” has attracted its fair share of affluent names, but Patrick Schwarzenegger to one side, which other celebs have graced Raya?

Which celebrities are on Raya?

Well, Kelly Osbourne’s profile was leaked on Instagram back in 2015, marking one of the first references of the app.

Nev Schulman from Catfish, too, was a user of the app,0 as well as newly-engaged Demi Lovato who previously outed herself as a Raya user in her documentary “Simply Complicated.”

More recently, Normal People star Paul Mescal, 24, was reported to have joined the app. A source revealed to The Mail that: “He knows he would be recognised instantly on regular dating apps so has turned to Raya because it's more exclusive and discreet.”

They continued: "He had to be invited onto it by one of his new celebrity pals and then apply before he was allowed to set up an account. But there are lots of beautiful people on there for him."

This Is Us star, Chrissy Metz, also revealed to Access that she had joined the app, saying she’d joined because she doesn’t have time to “chit chat to anybody.”

And Capital FM DJ Roman Kemp was reported to have joined the app following his split from Anne-Sophie Flury, with a source telling The Sun: "His pals have encouraged him to move on and have got him on [dating app] Raya, which is packed with attractive and creative women.”

But, perhaps one of Raya’s biggest success stories is, as Grazia hints, actress Amy Schumer, who reportedly met her husband through the app.

Mashable reported that the pair met on the secret dating app and, whilst it seems pretty farfetched, we’re still pretty excited about it.

As well as Schumer, Ranker reported that John Mayer, Chelsea Handler and Diplo were also people you’ll swipe past, or swipe right on, during a Raya session.

Playing for Keeps star Olympia Valance also admitted to meeting her AFL star boyfriend on the Tinder-for-celebs style app.

The star revealed all during an interview on a show named Fitzy and Wippa.

“I can’t believe no one has asked me this question in any interview, ever. Do I lie?” Valance, 27, said.

“We met on a dating app … It’s this app for people that are, like, in the public eye, called Raya.”

And, when asked if any superstars graced the app, she said, rather cryptically: “Oh my God, so many people … There were some really big stars.”

The show's host then asked who, which returned the answer a famous “race car driver” from Valance, and a telling silence from the star revealed it could well be Lewis Hamilton when the show host cried out his name.

It’s understood that out of all that apply for the app, only a very select few are certified, eight per cent in fact out of the thousands that apply.

Matthew Perry, Demi Lovato, Cara Delevingne, Zach Braff and Ruby Rose are among those rumoured to have fired up the app for a swipe too, and we’re preparing our chat-up lines now for our Raya app debut… in our dreams!
