The Symbolism in Simone Biles's Leotard Will Make You Love Her Even More

Although master gymnast and Olympic champion Simone Biles, 21, looks great in gold, the medal she won in Sunday’s U.S. National Gymnastics Championships, she wore a teal leotard during the competition.

What a performance from @Simone_Biles!

The color, she told the AP, “is for the survivors,” she said, referring to the hundreds of peers who survived former team physician Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse.

Biles counts herself among these women. “I stand with all of them and I think it’s kind of special to unite [people],” she said.

The gymnast’s leotard also features the letters “WCC,” which stands for “World Champions Centre,” the Spring, Texas, gym where Biles trains.

On her left hip is her name (“Simone”) and the logo of her sponsor, GK, which already is selling a replica of Biles’s outfit.

Biles says she chose her outfit in January, when Nassar’s sentencing was held. Although Biles was the only one to wear teal during Sunday’s competition, it will be interesting to see whether the sport’s governing body—and, perhaps, the rest of its participants—adopts the color as its own.
