The real reason that Sam’s Club and Costco check your receipts is to make sure you are not paying more than you should.
Most customers assume the reason a person has to check your receipt before you leave a big discount store like Costco or Sam’s Club is to ensure you didn’t steal anything. Well, as it turns out that is not accurate at all. In fact, it is just the opposite. The receipts are being checked to make sure you were not overcharged.

Oh yes, the reason sounds crazy, right? Is it really possible that a store like Costco or Sam’s Club is checking your receipt to ensure you are not getting taken advantage of? According to a recent Reddit thread, the answer is yes.
The Exit Greeter is the official name of the person who checks your receipt before you leave the store. He or she is looking to make sure you were not charged twice for an item, to verify that all promotions you were eligible for were applied and if a refund is required to get it to you as smoothly as possible.
In the Reddit thread, several employees from both Costco and Sam’s Club jumped in to clarify the real reason for the Exit Greeter after people were complaining. One former Costco employee explained the company has an entire department for stealing or loss prevention. The person at the door is there to help you and check that the cashier is doing their job correctly. This employee went on to explain it is all about benefiting the customer or members.
Laura Ladd Poff, the senior manager of corporate communications for Sam’s Club, confirmed the reason for the Exit Greeter to Cooking Light and it mirrored what the Costco employee said on the Reddit thread. She also explained that having someone talk to the customer before they leave is a way to connect with the member. It is an opportunity to see if there was an issue and determine if the customer’s experience was pleasant or not.
The next time you are shopping at a discount store where you have to show your receipt before you leave, remember that person is there to help you. Be nice, put a smile on your face, say please and thank you.
