Halloween is nearly here and with it comes the chance to dress up and pretend to be someone else for the night. Thanks to the Instagram, Pinterest, and the internet in general, throwing a sheet over your head and poking out holes for the eyes is no longer an acceptable means of self-expression. Costumes in 2018 are intensely researched, planned for, and executed with care.
Meme culture has given us costumes that never existed before – after all, who would have thought people would actually dress up as “Squinting Woman” – or even more surprisingly, that others would know who they were trying to look like? Still, some classic costumes remain popular. Every Halloween is bound to have plenty of angels, devils, nurses, and witches running around.
The online publication Lyst came up with a unique way to pinpoint Halloween costume trends for 2018: they looked at Pinterest searches for October and figured out what types of costumes people were planning. Here were the top ten:
1. Tonya Harding

Most millennials probably never heard of the most infamous figure skater of all time before the movie I, Tonya was released this year. But now that this skating legend is in the news again, it’s suddenly cool to emulate her rhinestone-studded costumes and intense stage makeup.
Pinterest doesn’t lie: according to Lyst, there is a 720% increase in searches for images of Tonya Harding. Also, interestingly, people have been busily pinning pictures of scrunchies (do kids these days even know what those are?) Seems like there will be lots of young ice skaters hitting the Halloween party circuit this Halloween.
2. Betty and Jughead
Some of us remember when you could buy the latest issue of Archie comics in the supermarket checkout line. Suddenly, Archie and friends have reached new levels of popularity in the mainstream media ever since the show Riverdale hit Netflix. The outfits might be a little harder to interpret, but a mix of sexy and preppy combine to form some of the most iconic comic book characters of all time. Lyst explains that Jughead and Betty are the most popular Halloween costumes so far.
3. 90s Icons

Ah, the 90s – a decade that’s so easy to love and even easier to parody. Whether people choose to dress as a schoolgirl like Britney Spears in her Hit Me Baby One More Time music video or break out their best flannel and channel Kurt Cobain, the 90s provides a ton of inspiration for Halloween costumes. Apparently searches for classic 90s-era brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Fila are up 920% over the past few months.
4. Warrior of Wakanda

Marvel movies are all but guaranteed to provide costume inspiration for Halloween, and Black Panther proves that point beautifully. Searches for Wakandan costumes are up 504% this fall. Why? Because it looks so darn cool.
5. Flamingo
The most random costume on the list? Flamingo! Yes, people have been dressing up like animals ever since the first Halloween, but 2018 has the unique quality of inspiring a whole bunch of flamingo costumes complete with pink fluffy jumpers and pink leggings. No word on whether anyone plans to trick or treat while hopping on one leg.
6. Edna Mode

She may be a secondary character on The Incredibles 2, but Edna Mode is the most beloved option for Halloween costumes. Maybe it’s her girl boss attitude. Maybe it’s her short stature. You know what, it’s probably those trendy spectacles. No matter what the reason, Edna Mode was searched 669% more often over the past few months.
7. Dancing Queen
Abba and the rumor of a digital reunion tour, plus the release of Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again, made disco flair a popular option for Halloween this year. Searches for bright patterned flairs has gone up 210% since the summer. Mamma Mia costumes specifically are up 1636% since last year.
8. Cosmic Fairy
Stars, moons, suns – the phrase “cosmic fairy” might be vague, but it’s what’s trending right now in the costume world. You can achieve the look by dressing in ethereal hues and painting mini constellations on your face. There are plenty of celestial-inspired outfits to complete the look.
9. Frida Kahlo

The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is colorful, recognizable, and perfect for Halloween this year. And since celebrities like Beyonce and Rihanna keep getting photographed wearing floral crowns just like Kahlo favored, the look is very on-trend right now. That’s probably why Pinterest has a 55% increase in searches for Frida Kahlo costumes.
10. Cow
Is there any way to make a cow costume look cute? It turns out that yes, there is. Thanks in part to the viral success of Doja Cat’s “Mooo!” video, the cow costume trend is alive and well with searches that increased by 680% this year. Going as part of a group? Your pals could dress up like milk, cowboys, or even milkshakes for a cohesive look.
