Savannah Guthrie is not backing down! The Today show coanchor angered many social media users on Tuesday, November 20, after referring to cheesecake as a pie, and she is sticking by her choice of words
The playful drama began during Wednesday’s broadcast of the NBC show in the midst of a segment about the country’s favorite Thanksgiving pies. After revealing that pumpkin pie is the most popular choice, followed by pecan and apple pie, respectively, coanchor Craig Melvin asked his colleagues – Jenna Bush Hager, Guthrie and Sheinelle Jones – to weigh in with their top picks. That’s where things started to get interesting.
“This one? Cheesecake,” Melvin said, gesturing at Guthrie, who was seated beside him. “Not a pie.”
The children’s book author defended herself by stating her thoughts on pie in general, explaining, “I don’t like pie! There, I said it.” Guthrie, 46, also intimated the show’s producers had given her the go-ahead to make her controversial pick. “They said fine!”
After some additional pressure from Melvin and Hager (Jones initially supported her coworker’s stance) Guthrie, a Georgetown-educated lawyer, made a compelling case for herself. “It’s round like a pie. You slice it like a pie. It has filling like a pie. It has a crust,” she argued. “I think it has far more in common with pie than (cake). I think I’ve made an argument here.”
Still, Melvin, 39, wasn’t buying it. “Cake is in the title!” he retorted. “It’s called cheesecake!”
“Cheesecake is a cake,” Bush Hager, 36, agreed.
The debate on social media that ignited after the segment aired was just as spirited (perhaps even more so) than the one that played out at the news desk. Guthrie even sent out a tweet urging people to be “open minded” in their views on dessert. Check out a slew of reactions below:
