A woman who battled severe acne for almost a decade has revealed how an inexpensive bar of soap finally cured her spots within weeks after years of trying every remedy on the market.
Plumber Hanna Muir, 23, from Glasgow started getting acne at the age of 14 and the only thing that made it better was going on the pill, but she had to give it up because of migraines.
She then tried a variety of antibiotics and topical creams prescribed by a dermatologist, as well as changing her diet and using herbal remedies, but nothing worked and her confidence took a knock.
‘I always tried to never let my acne affect my confidence, but some days I would redo my make-up again and again to try and reduce how bumpy or dry my skin looked from using too much topical cream.
‘People would sometimes ask innocently “what’s that on your face?”, and I would try and laugh it off, but feel terrible that it was so noticeable even though I tried so hard to hide it all.’
Earlier this year, Hanna discovered £6 Carbon Theory soap at Boots and within days of using the organic tea tree oil and charcoal product, she noticed an improvement in her skin.

Hana’s jaw was covered in cystic acne, and no matter what antibiotics or topical creams she used, nothing made a difference
Hana’s trouble with acne started during puberty when she was around 14, but the spots eased off when she went on the pill at 16, but she had to come off it after suffering severe migraines.
‘But with this, my acne came back more aggressively than ever before,’ she recalled.

‘I was referred to a dermatologist at about 17. I was put on every antibiotic and topical cream they could possibly give me, but nothing was clearing the acne from my face.
‘I tried everything from prescribed creams and antibiotics to all the dermatologically approved lotions and potions. I tried silver serum which helped temporarily, but not long-term.
Within a few days of using Carbon Theory organic tea tree and charcoal soap, £6, Hana noticed her skin was feeling smoother
‘I tried Proactiv but again, it worked for a while and then it wasn’t really doing much and for £30 a month I didn’t feel it was worth it.
‘I’ve had Manuka honey on my face, tea tree oils, drying lotions and anything from drugstore to high-end brands. I tried to change my diet and drink lemon water – anything to help.’
Hanna’s only option was to take Roaccutane, but she was concerned after reading that the drug had been linked to depression and suicide.
‘By this point, my acne had become so severe, that spots were now cystic and very sore,’ she said.
‘But I was really hesitant as the potentially dangerous side effects massively outweighed suffering from acne for the rest of my life.’
Hanna admits she started to panic, as she had no idea where to turn next.
Hanna noticed a difference in her skin within days, but after four weeks the cystic acne on her chin and cheeks was almost completely gone
As she was trying to figure out her options, she read an online article about a £6 soap people claimed could clear acne in a matter of weeks.
‘I thought, “may as well try it, it’s only 6 quid after all and I doubt it will work if the strongest topical cream can’t even clear my acne slightly”.
‘But after just three days there was already an improvement. My skin felt soothed and my complexion had started to clear.
‘After four weeks I noticed such a change. My skin is now better than it has been in years.
Hanna’s skin before: The acne on her face was so severe that the only option left to her was the drug Roaccutane, but Hana was reluctant because of potential side effects. Right: After using Carbon Theory soap for four weeks, her skin was almost clear
‘I’ve never felt confident to step out the house without make-up, but it’s now so improved that I have days where I can get away with just a BB cream rather than full coverage foundation.
‘People used to innocently ask ‘what’s that on your face’ and I would try and laugh it off but it completely knocked my confidence and I would hide everything in thick make-up, which was doing more damage than good.
I’m now getting compliments on my skin, which is amazing. I never thought a £6 soap would change my life as silly as that sounds.
Plumber Hanna used to constantly reapply her make-up throughout the day to cover her spots and dry skin, but now she’s feeling much more confident
‘I can be confident in my own skin and not have to cover up in make-up.’
Carbon Theory, made by a London-based start-up, launched exclusively in Boots earlier this year and quickly sold out in many stores across the country as fans hailed it as a ‘miracle’ product on social media.
Made with organic tea tree oil and charcoal to reduce inflammation, fans have been praising the product on Instagram and sharing images of how it’s improved their skin.
Celebrity fans include Rosie Fortescue and Roxie Nafousi and the brand insists the positive feedback has come spontaneously ‘none has been paid for by advertising or influencer seeding’.
Hana said the difference in her skin has been ‘life changing’ and she now feels confident enough to go out without wearing heavy make-up
