But now, one savvy traveler has figured out a way to make your bag appear lighter than it actually is when checking it in – and his controversial hack has sparked a massive debate on the web.

Someone with the username @Bed.Sweater shared a clip detailing the new travel tip to TikTok and it quickly went viral, gaining more than 2.3 million views and dividing the internet.

In the video, a man could be seen weighing his suitcase at the check-in counter. It weighed around 54 pounds – but when he pressed his foot against the bottom of the scale, the number lowered to 49 pounds.

‘Kinda surprised this worked,’ the TikTok user wrote on top of the clip.

‘The baggage lady was cool about it,’ he added in the caption. 

Some people were all for the idea and called the TikToker the ‘greatest of all time’ for sharing it, while others branded it as ‘dangerous’ and ‘foolish’ because ‘weight and balance’ is so ‘important’ to flying.

‘Please don’t don’t do this ’cause you want to be cheap, the people who plan the weight and balance of planes use that information,’ one person wrote.

‘You are putting your life at risk as well as causing injury to the airline workers who work in small cramped spaces. Literally have had friends dislocate their shoulder [carrying heavy bags].’

‘That’s dangerous for the other passengers low-key,’ agreed another user.

Someone else said: ‘This is foolish. I do not recommend doing this because weight and balance is important for flight.’ 

‘Nice to know that you could potentially be the reason for a plane to go down,’ read a fourth comment.

Genius or dangerous? Some people were all for the idea and called the TikToker the ‘goat’ for sharing it, while others branded it as ‘unsafe’ because ‘weight’ is ‘important’ to flying

‘Kinda unsafe. Aircraft have a max weights they can carry. Be careful bro,’ a fifth one said.

But dozens of others took a different stance. 

‘Take a bow please… The goat has officially arrived,’ one supporter commented, while another wrote, ‘Pro move.’ 

Some even admitted that they’ve tried the hack for themselves and confirmed that it does indeed work.

‘As someone who flew for years for work… I did this every week,’ said one person. 

‘I do this all the time. It works,’ another revealed, while a third commented, ‘I always do this.’

Back in July, a woman named Christie went viral for sharing a similar hack to TikTok, except instead of placing his foot under the scale itself, her boyfriend put it under the actual suitcase to make it seem lighter.

He subtly lifted the suitcase off the scale using his foot without the airline employee noticing, which helped the number on the scale drop. 

‘When you already know she packed over her weight limit,’ she wrote alongside the clip, which was viewed nearly six million times.

Her video launched a similar argument in the comment section, with some people calling it ‘genius’ and thanking her for the idea, while others warned against it.

Both American Airlines and Delta Airlines charge an extra $100 if your bag weighs between 51-70lbs, and $200 for a bag that weighs 71-100lbs.

United Airlines has a fee of $200 for bags that weigh 51-70lbs, and if your suitcase weighs between 71-100lbs, you’ll have to fork over a whopping $400.

David M. Rowell, the publisher of The Travel Insider, previously told the New York Times that the immense charges come from ‘a revenue opportunity’ rather than a safety measure.
