DEAR DEIDRE: MY pregnant girlfriend wants her baby’s dad to be present at the birth to help them bond and she thinks my objections are childish.
We have been together very happily for six months.
She is 25, I am 26. She found she was pregnant a month into our relationship. The dates proved it was her ex’s.
I was OK with it and have supported her through the pregnancy.
Her ex has been taking an interest in the baby.
But only two people are allowed at the birth and she’s chosen her sister and her ex, not me.
I am not happy either that he will see her naked.
She says I can come in immediately afterwards.
Her sister says best not to upset her at this stage, but I know it will affect our relationship if she chooses her ex over me.
DEIDRE SAYS:
Believe me, the bedside view when a woman is giving birth is no turn-on, so don’t worry about that aspect of it.
But I see your unease. If you are to help raise this child it is just as important that you bond with the baby.
Tell your girlfriend you need to know if she is nurturing a romantic hope she will get back with her baby’s father.
If not, then it’s your place by her side.
