Mum dies after Michelin-starred restaurant meal to celebrate husband’s birthday

A mum has died after eating at a top Michelin-starred restaurant while celebrating her husband’s birthday.

The 46-year-old, who had reportedly eaten the tasting menu, was one of 19 people who fell ill after dinner at RIFF in Valencia, Spain.

The woman, her husband and 12-year-old son, were amongst those to feel sick after returning from the popular eatery, known for ‘innovative’ dishes.

The three family members had reportedly begun to show food poisoning symptoms – including vomiting and diarrhoea – on Saturday.

However, while the father and son recovered, the woman’s symptoms became more severe and she died at home on Sunday morning.

On Wednesday, officials told local media that 18 people had suffered light symptoms after eating at the one-starred restaurant.

Regional health chief Ana Barceló told El Pais an investigation is underway.

She said: "We’ve conducted a primary inspection of the establishment and everything appears to be normal.

“Analytical tests will now be carried out on the food products.”

Public health officials are reported to have collected ingredients and raw food product samples – and are currently analysing them.

Ms Barceló told the Spanish paper that it could not be confirmed whether the sickness was caused by morel mushrooms on the restaurant’s menu.

The owner of RiFF, Bernd H. Knöller, said the restaurant will remained closed until the cause of the food poisoning outbreak is determined and “activities can resume with full assurances for the staff and the patrons.”

He added that the inspection "showed the restaurant complied with all sanitary regulations".

And said: “Regardless of what caused the situation, I want to convey my deep regret for what happened, and I hope all of the facts will be clarified shortly.”
