Johnny Depp’s appearance at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday has drawn mixed reactions from viewers.
“Having Johnny Depp be the #VMAs Moon man is certainly a choice,” radio producer Shem tweeted.
“Johnny Depp showing up at the VMAs for funny cameos is really f–king gross” journalist Alex Suskind echoed.
However, a third Twitter user disagreed, tweeting, “Johnny Depp saying ‘Hey, I needed the work’ was pretty funny, but you gotta be read well into the Depp drama to know what it’s about. That said, kudos to the #VMAs for giving a defamed man a chance to be back in the limelight.”
In the few seconds Depp, 59, was on the screen, he appeared via hologram dressed as the VMA’s iconic silver astronaut statue that winners are awarded. He joked, “Hey, you know what? I needed the work.”
LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” then could be heard playing in the background in what appears to be a peculiar nod to the actor’s toxic relationship with ex-wife Amber Heard.
It appears Depp will appear sporadically throughout the show, as he appeared during another segment of the show with another quip, saying, “I just want you guys to know that I’m available for birthdays, bar mitvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes. Any old thing you need.”
A source close to production confirmed to The Post on Aug. 21 that Depp would be making a surprise appearance at the awards show.
People on social media already had many opinions about the “Pirate of the Caribbean” star’s guest stint at the VMAs when the news first broke.
One person’s tweet, which received more than 4,000 “likes,” read, “hollywood LOVES to remind everyone just how much they live to protect abusers. they will go out of their way to do it, actually. johnny depp has no real connection to the VMAs, but he could be there anyway cause that’s what they do.”
However, another disagreed, tweeting, “Johnny Depp will be at the VMAs 🥹 nothing makes me happier than seeing this man get his life back now that the nightmare he’d been through is finally over. you can’t keep a good man down. I’m so proud of him. #SupportJohnnyDeppAtVMAs the king has returned 👑. #JohnnyDeppRises”
The VMA appearance comes more than two months after Depp won his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Although the ruling was overwhelmingly in the “Edward Scissorhands” star’s favor, several damning allegations were made about him during the highly publicized trial.
Heard, 36, claimed during her testimony that Depp beat and threatened to kill her when he abused drugs and alcohol. She also accused him of succumbing to fits of jealousy, particularly over her interactions with her former co-star James Franco.
Depp vehemently denied all claims of abuse since Heard first made her accusations.
After the trial, the “Black Mass” star said he felt “at peace” and “overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and the colossal support and kindness from around the world.”
His career also seemed to bounce back pretty quickly.
Aside from his VMAs appearance, Depp is set to direct a film about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, and produce the movie alongside Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.
According to TMZ, he also inked a multi-year, seven-figure deal to continue appearing as the celebrity face of Dior’s bestselling Sauvage cologne.
