A mother-of-two has sparked fierce debate after revealing why her husband never sits with her and their kids on a flight.

Maria Roberts, from New Jersey, went viral after sharing a very candid video to Instagram.

It showed her constantly doting on her children, aged five and three, while on board a plane as husband Lou sat undisturbed in a different row entirely.

But other social media users were left bitterly divided as one stated: ‘I cannot believe that in 2023 women still accept this behavior.’

It showed her constantly doting on her children, aged five and three, while on board a plane as husband Lou sat undisturbed in a different row entirely

In the clip, which has been viewed more than 16 million times, Maria can be seen sitting in the seat between her son and daughter.

She is kept on her feet as she entertains the duo with reading materials, untangles headphones and rummages through backpacks.

Meanwhile, her husband was sat by himself with his headphones in watching the inflight entertainment.

Adding context in the caption, she said: ‘As Lou likes to say, “I would switch with you, but they refuse to sit next to me.”‘

And viewers were left bitterly divided.

In one camp, there were those that said they could relate as one wrote: ‘Every. Damn. Flight.’

Another added: ‘Hilarious this is also our family! Except my husband is sleeping soundly.’

And a third said: ‘Everything about this resonates.’

In one camp, there were those that said they could relate as one wrote: ‘Every. Damn. Flight.’

On the other hand, some claimed that it was unacceptable as one argued: ‘Oh no way!! Let’s promote a new standard and SHAME weaponized incompetence of our spouses. You deserve better!!’

Someone else wrote: ‘I hate that this is still a standard we are promoting. Even young children can learn that Dad is a good option and don’t need to always be with mom.

‘Please for the love of god stop reinforcing that dads are incapable.’

Another commented: ‘Why is he not doing anything with the kids? Wow that’s a terrible husband and father.’

Since the backlash, part-time speech pathologist Maria told Good Morning America: ‘It’s meant to have moms feel like, “Oh, my gosh, I’m not the only one going through this type of situation” in a humorous way, so we can laugh about it and de-stress a little bit.

Maria said: ‘We may change how we do our flight setup in the future but I also like to sit next to both of my kids’

‘We’re just trying to get from point A to point B on the plane as smoothly and as stress-free as possible. Both of my kids prefer to sit with me. So that’s just how we do it.

‘They sit with me, my husband takes the seat directly across from us on the aisle so he can be right there too.

‘But Mom ends up being the one that’s coordinating all of the things with the kids. Dad’s kind of hanging out but he’s there if needed.
