Lost your tin opener? Here’s how to open a can using only a SPOON

  •  Clever kitchen hack allows you to open a tin using just a spoon

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a can of beans on toast…

But as the warming anticipation of the tomato sauce on your tongue builds, your hope turns to despair when you realise your trusty can opener is missing from the kitchen drawer.

Your stomach growls and your suspicion grow – in times like these, where do you turn?

Not very far it seems, as demonstrated by vlogger DaveHax who has revealed how to open a tin can using no more than a simple spoon.

A YouTuber shared an easy hack to open a tin without a special opener

The trick involves using a spoon to pierce around the edge of the lid

Tins are designed to be incredibly sturdy in order to make the food inside airtight, keeping it fresh for as long as months or even years

The YouTuber showed how vieweres can pierce the metal by gripping tight on to a regular desert spoon and pushing it hard to make a groove on one side of the lid.

He then used the edge of the spoon to cut a circle around the edge of the lid.

But he warns viewers that opening a tin with a spoon can leave sharp edges.

‘Of course, opening a can like this does make a really sharp and jagged edge so you do need to be really careful.’

He adds that people should consider wearing safety gloves just in case.

Several users commented on how effective the hack was: ‘ Unbelievably, this hack does actually work. I was camping with four friends and we had some tinned food for dinner, but no tin opener.

But the useful get-around does leave the edges of the lid sharp and jagged, so be careful

‘I told them anyway that I would open the tins with a spoon, and incredibly, managed to do so.

‘Cue four very impressed and grateful friends, who would have otherwise not had anything to eat. It does take quite a bit of effort, but hunger is a wonderful motivator!’

‘I might just start crying. You saved my night. Stupid day at work and forgot my can opener snapped, another wrote.

‘Most of what I want to make meatball sandwiches is in a can (sauce and diced tomato/pepper mix).

‘I had resigned myself to crappy TV dinners after being excited to have these sandwiches all day.

Another user said that the hack was made to look easier than it is in the video but had nonetheless helped with their lunch.

They remarked: ‘This totally saved my lunch at work today! Lol not NEARLY as easy as the video makes it look, but I WAS able to finally get enough of the lid off using the spoon to eat my ravioli. Thanks!
