Lidl has launched a range of cured meats from a luxury brand that also sells its wares at upmarket department store Selfridges for more than twice the price.

The budget store is the first UK supermarket chain to sell British-made salami and chorizo by Cannon&Cannon, which is based at high-end Borough Market in central London.

It is selling packets for just £1.99 each – while similar cured meats by the same brand at Selfridges cost £4.50.

All the 10 new cured meats are made in Britain, with the salami and chorizo selections coming from Wales, Scotland, Kent, Cornwall, London, and Yorkshire.

Each region gives the salami or chorizo a different flavour, and the different herbs used in the curing process include fennel, rosemary and paprika.

The meat all comes from high-welfare British pigs in the north east, south, and west of England and Scotland.

Cannon&Cannon usually supplies the UK’s top restaurants, delis and food halls, but it has now partnered up with the German-founded budget retailer too.

Selfridges also sells salami and chorizo by Cannon & Cannon but the prices are much steeper.

It has different flavours on offer, and its salami and chorizo sausages start from £4.50.

The high-end department store also stocks Cannon&Cannon’s luxury charcuterie boards, which cost £55 each and come with five varieties of meat, as well as crackers, a jar of chutney, lardo and rillette.

Lidl’s offering is a paired down version, with 10 different types of meat on sale for £1.99 each.

Thomas Bryan, meat buying manager at Lidl UK, said: ‘This partnership is enabling us to showcase the quality and innovation of locally cured meats in Britain today, as well as supporting smaller, local suppliers.

‘It’s exciting to be able to bring top-quality salamis and chorizos from artisanal British producers to an interested customer base, looking to engage with food provenance at a local level.’

The new cured meats will be on sale in Lidl stores from Thursday, August 23.
