Kate Middleton‘s latest look gave her a leg up on the competition.
The Duchess of Cambridge, 37, arrived at the King’s Cup Regatta in Cowes, England, on Thursday in an appropriately nautical ensemble: a colorful striped peplum top from Sandro ($190, sold out), navy L.K. Bennett trousers ($181, sold out) and white Superga sneakers ($64.95).
But it’s what she changed into for the charity sailing race itself that really raised eyebrows.
Before boarding a boat, Middleton donned a sporty white polo and jacket, baseball cap and navy shorts — an item of clothing she’s never worn since becoming a member of the royal family in 2011. The last time the duchess wore shorts in public, in fact, was at a roller disco party in 2008.
Fans seemed to love her look, with Twitter users exclaiming, “No one freak out, but Kate Middleton wore shorts??? Yassss queeeeeennnnnn” and “Kate needs to wear shorts more often! She is rocking them!”
Middleton’s husband Prince William, meanwhile, matched his wife in a similar style, while their famously shorts-loving son Prince George chose a khaki pair for the occasion.
