Your scalp produces oil from the sebaceous glands for a reason.

Your hair needs some oil to keep it moisturised and prevent frizz and breakage.

That means you can wash your hair too often, just as you can wash not frequently enough.

How often should you wash your hair? Is it bad to wash your hair every day?

Is it bad to wash your hair every day?

Yes, you should try not to wash your hair every day.

However, how often you should wash your hair depends on your hair type.

Experts at Boots say washing oily hair every day actually makes it greasier in the long run.

This is because over-washing it stimulates too much oil production in the scalp.

Dry hair should be washed every two to three days and curly hair can go three or more days without washing.

Some of our favourite celebs go without a rinse for longer than this.

Kim Kardashians has her hair washed and blowdried and washes it five days later.

Lorde leaves her curly locks as long as two weeks without a wash.

Selena Gomez and Jennifer Aniston wash their locks every three days, on average.

So what is the recipe for healthy and beautiful hair?

According to the experts at British, Ayurvedic hair care brand Chāmpo, you should wash your hair two to three times a week at the most during the winter.

They said: “Try to wash your hair only two or three times a week to prevent it from drying out in the cold.

“This reduces the amount of heat styling in your routine, where high temperatures on our hair straightening irons or curling tongs can be extremely harsh on the hair.”

To keep your hair nicely moisturised, use a sulphate-free shampoo like Chāmpo’s Kapha, Vata or Pitta.

If you simply need to wash your hair every day, try a co-wash.

A co-wash is where you wash your hair with just water and conditioner.

Simply soak your hair in cool water and massage your scalp.

Apply a thick and moisturising conditioner to the ends and rinse out.

This section of your hair tends to get damaged by handbags, coats, and scarves.

Try to use cool water on your hair, since hot water strips your hair of natural moisture and encourages overproduction of oil and swear on the scalp.

The experts at Chāmpo suggested: “Finish your shower (if you dare) by blasting with cold water at the ends to help close and seal the hair cuticles.”

After this, use dry shampoo and other products to keep your hair in check throughout the week.

For example, use Chāmpo’s Weightless Hair Oil to keep your hair strong and shiny, and Batiste Dry Shampoo in the roots to keep grease at bay.
