I almost lost my dream home after being slapped with surprise £1.5k legal fees – how you can avoid it

FIRST-time buyer Dami Odele almost missed out on her dream home after her solicitor tried to charge her an extra £1,500 on the day she was due to exchange contracts.

Dami, 26, saved up just over £27,000 for a deposit on a two-bed house with a stunning lake view in Dartford, Kent.

But on the day she was meant to formalise the sale, she was told the original £1,000 quoted by her solicitor to cover her legal fees wouldn’t be enough.

Instead, Dami was told she needed another £1,500 on top of this – bringing the total cost to £2,500 – or risk losing the home she’d fallen in love with.

She ended up switching solicitor at the eleventh hour, which saved her £1,000 after paying £700 to leave her current firm and £800 to her new lawyers.

It meant having to delay her exchange by ten days while the new solicitors took on the work, but she finally moved in last month.
