Tom Brady is, among many other things, a natural leader.
And in case you required evidence, his New England Patriots teammate Matthew Slater has shared a snippet from Sunday’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs which illustrates just how influential the quarterback is.
Slater, a special teamer, said Brady delivered a simple three-word message to him when the Patriots were 33-30 down, with just eight minutes left on the clock.
At this vital moment, the Patriots were coming to terms with the fact that they’d blown a 15-point lead.
Slater was not in optimistic mood. His kickoff coverage unit had surrendered a 97-yard return that led to a Chiefs touchdown.
But Brady, unruffled by the pressure-cooker situation, made his way over, bumped fists and uttered: "We are good."
According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Slater described the events in the locker room.
He recalled thinking, “We are? It sure doesn’t feel that way,” after Brady’s confident statement.
But Brady was right. The Patriots won the match 43-40 after a thrilling finale in which the veteran quarterback played a key role.
“I guess we were good,” Slater told the room.
Slater told how Brady’s unwavering self-belief when things didn’t look good was infectious and reassuring.
He said: “You can look in a man’s eyes and know, in pressure situations, this guy is not going to be able to handle this, he’s not going to be ready.
"You look into that guy’s eyes and it’s a laser-like focus.
“They haven’t always worked out for us, but you see extreme confidence in his eyes, and that’s because he’s prepared, he’s done it, and he believes in the guys around him.”
Brady, 41, is a five-time Super Bowl winner renowned for being one of the best closers in the game.
His team travel to Chicago to face the Bears at Solder Field on Sunday.
