Get off to a flying start at university with our top deals on tech and food freebies

HEADING off to uni is exciting – but students naturally worry about money.

There are, however, little extras and freebies that can get them off to a sound budgeting start, while enjoying treats along the way.

These savvy tips are my current favourites . . .

AMAZON NEWS: Companies like Amazon look to build brand loyalty early and half-price Amazon Prime membership is offered to students.

Currently, you can get a six-month free trial courtesy of Microsoft Surface.

After the trial, Prime Student is just £3.99 a month, usually £7.99 a month for non-students.

Subscription includes unlimited one-day delivery, unlimited movies and TV shows, secure unlimited photo storage, early access to lightning deals, on-demand and ad-free music streaming.

WHAT'S COOKING: Making meals can be daunting, especially on small budgets. But students can get a free Budget Cookbook download.

This fab freebie is sure to be a big help when it comes to eating tasty food for as little as £18 per week (87p per meal). To download, see tinybudgetcooking.com.

MUSIC TO MY EARS: University students can enjoy Spotify Premium for £4.99 a month. It is usually £9.99.

Benefits include advert-free music listening, offline play mode and on- demand playback — plus you can get an option to combine Headspace, the meditation app, for another £4.99.

EXTRA TREATS: Students can get a free cheeseburger at McDonald’s when they buy any Extra Value or Wrap meal.

All you have to do is show your student card or UNiDAYS ID. If you don’t fancy a cheeseburger, you can opt for a McFlurry or a mayo chicken.

Lovers of Greggs are also in for a treat. The baker is giving students an extra nibble for the start of term, offering a free sweet treat or savoury item when buying any sandwich deal.

Students who fancy a bake on their way to lectures just need to present a Student Beans ID page or valid student card when buying a full sandwich deal.
