  • She feels people should stop eating in cinemas as they’re ‘not fast food outlets’
  • Many viewers disagreed with one teasing they’d ‘pour popcorn over her head’

Christine Hamilton has claimed that eating food in the cinema is ‘deeply selfish and unfair’ amid a debate about snacking during a film.

The presenter, 70, from Bournemouth, appeared on Good Morning Britain today alongside reality star Clare Brockett, 42, Essex, to discuss whether food should be banned from cinemas to stop films being disrupted by noisy eaters.

Christine told that while she doesn’t want to place a blanket ban on food, as the occasional ‘cough sweet’ is okay, she thinks eating foods like crisps in the cinema or theatre is ‘totally unacceptable’.

But viewers disagreed that food shouldn’t be allowed in cinemas, with one teasing they would ‘tip popcorn over someone’s head’ if they told them to be quiet, while another slammed the idea as ‘absolute nonsense’ and said it was part of a tradition and ‘added to the atmosphere’.

This comes after The Crown star, Imelda Staunton, 64, revealed that when she notices a fellow cinema or theatre audience member on their mobile or tucking into crisps, she tells them to keep quiet.

Christine claimed that eating food in the cinema is ‘deeply selfish and unfair’ amid a debate about snacking during a film while Clare felt food was the best part of her trip

Christine said: ‘I certainly wouldn’t ban it because I’m not an authoritarian and if people want the odd cough sweet that’s fine.

‘But yes this noisy eating I think is deeply selfish, I think it’s unrealistic and unfair.’

Clare disagreed, insisting: ‘It’s just I really enjoy it because it’s my excuse to pig out and I pick everything.’

But Christine went on: ‘It’s totally unacceptable, why do you go to a film to eat it’s not a fast foot outlet is it?’.

The TOWIE star went on to argue that there are other factors that can spoil the atmosphere in a ‘social place’ that could affect your enjoyment of the film.

Christine responded: ‘It’s not that long ago that everyone smoked in the cinema and that was acceptable and it isn’t just the noise, it’s the smell.’

Viewers quickly took to Twitter to share their views, with one insisting that those who don’t like cinema snacking should stay at home.

One wrote: ‘No way do I agree. If I go to the cinema I go to munch on the popcorn. If you don’t like it then don’t go and wait for the movie to come out on DVD and watch it.’

Clare disagreed, insisting the cinema is an excuse for her to treat herself to her favourite snacks

‘Two to three hours sat doing nothing except watching a film makes me starving. If she’d rather listen to my stomach rumble go for it’, said another.

A third commented: ‘Wouldn’t be the cinema without some snacks to share.’

‘Absolute nonsense we where in a very busy cinema yesterday seeing a kids film! Didn’t even notice ANY noise from snacks!’, raged another.

As Ranvir munched on some tortilla chips Laura began to throw popcorn at Richard, eventually pouring an entire bucket over his head

However, some viewers did agree with Christine and Imelda and felt that food could be consumed before going into the cinema, and insisted it ‘spoils the atmosphere’ to hear someone ‘crunching or slurping behind you’.

‘Definitely agree with Imelda! Plus the smell of those nacho things and as for the people using their mobiles’, wrote another.
